Jennifer (Jenn) Hyman, CEO and Jennifer (Jenny) Fleiss met at Harvard Business School.  Jenn headed back to NY City, her hometown, and visited with her friend named Becky. Becky had an upcoming wedding and thought it be great to find a designer dress without spending a fortune. 

Jenn went back to Harvard and worked on several business plans with Jenny. In addition business plans, meetings with top designers and retailers also occurred too.  Bain Capital Ventures provided some financing. Rent The Runway was born.


After signing up online, Rent the Runway emails you a brief Q and A letting you know, when you should place your order, what to do if the dress does not fit, how they can help with fashion emergencies, ensures that the clothes are dry cleaned in eco friendly solutions, and a $5 insurance policy can be purchased in case the clothing/accessory gets damaged.

To introduce designer brands to younger generations, the company has a Runway Rep program that provides internship experience to plan and execute Runway fashion shows and private renting events at over 50 colleges and universities.  Currently 150 Runway Reps have been selected on leadership, entrepreneurial, marketing, and public relation skills.  According to RTR blog, Rent The Runway hosted it's first ever Runway Rep College Capstone weekend of fashion activities in the Meatpacking district of NYC.
